Our History

Our History and context

We are an independent regulatory body established under the National Health Professionals Act LR 31 with statutory functions to:

  • Register and regulate health practitioners
  • Regulate (accredit) health education institutions
  • License health facilities.

NHPC Act LR.31 was passed and signed by the Upper House on November 26, 2019 and the House of the People on November 29, 2018. The Act was approved on 16/11/2020 by the former President of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed 'Farmaajo'. The former regulatory staff at MOH transferred and commenced their work at the NHPC headquarters on 1/8/2023.

The NHPC began operating on 21/9/2023.

Great change is underway in Somalia’s health system. We are building the institutions that will play a central and critical role in assuring the quality of the Somali health workforce. Health professionals are accountable to the NHPC for the quality of care they provide, and through the NHPC to the House of the People of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
