Somalia Joins the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA)
The National Health Professionals Council of Somalia (NHPC) is pleased to announce that the Federal Republic of Somalia has officially become a member of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA). The membership was approved during a high-level session held at AMCOA headquarters in Pretoria, South Africa, where Somalia’s application received unanimous endorsement.
Somalia now becomes the 24th member state to join AMCOA, an organization established in 1996 to strengthen, harmonize, and advance the regulation of health professions across the African continent. The association plays a vital role in promoting public safety, improving professional standards, and supporting capacity-building within national health regulatory bodies.
The NHPC emphasized that this historic milestone reflects Somalia’s growing commitment to building a strong, accountable, and internationally aligned healthcare regulatory system that serves the best interests of the Somali population.

“Somalia’s membership in the Association of Medical Councils of Africa is a significant and historic achievement for our nation. It demonstrates our dedication to advancing the national healthcare regulatory framework and ensuring that our people receive high-quality and internationally compliant services,” said Mohamed Mahmoud Addow, Secretary General of the National Health Professionals Council.
The NHPC highlights that this membership opens new opportunities for Somalia to actively participate in continental health agendas, access shared expertise, and benefit from research findings, policy guidance, and best-practice frameworks developed by member states.

Through this collaboration, Somalia aims to strengthen its national health workforce, improve service delivery, and contribute meaningfully to Africa’s collective efforts to ensure safer, more reliable, and more efficient healthcare systems.
The National Health Professionals Council extends its gratitude to AMCOA leadership for their support and looks forward to active engagement, knowledge exchange, and joint initiatives that advance the wellbeing of communities across the continent.
